Mattias is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Oceanography at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, WA. Ever since his first cruise to the Antarctic as an undergraduate Mattias has been fascinated by polar regions, interested specifically in interactions between the physical environment and phytoplankton, the base of the marine food web. He completed his graduate training in biological oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and has since had the pleasure to work as part of international and interdisciplinary teams while working at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Applied Physics Laboratory at UW. Returning for his second cruise to the Fram Strait region, Mattias looks forward to exploring interactions between sea ice and primary producers, and to be able to share this work and journey with younger generations of scientists.
